Flying Baby and other things
Una was destined to be a traveling baby from day one. When half of your relatives live on the other side of the world that's a given. She went on her first 600-miles road trip when she was one month old and this past week she got to fly for the first time. I had to go to San Francisco for a conference and J and Una came with me (no compromising the breastfeeding here). She is a great flying baby and really got to prove herself when there were seven other babies and three toddlers seated alone on our last flight from Seattle to Fairbanks. Talk about loud. We put J's big headphones on her ears and she slept the whole way. Next month we will do it again when I have a conference in Seattle. And in August Una and I will travel alone to Portland for a third conference. At that point we believe she will be ready to cross the Atlantic and we will head to Denmark (in November).
I'm torn between whether it's insane or amazing, but it's who we are and how we decided to live our life. She grew so much in the six days we were away. Her awareness and focus just snapped into place in a whole new way. And then she got to experience things like high wind and ocean breeze. If you've been to San Francisco you know that the wind can be pretty strong and Una cracked up every time it blew through her stroller. She stuck to her "I'm from Alaska" memo when it came to the heat - hence the bottle of cold water she is holding on to in the picture below.
